Railway Foot Overbridge collapsed in south Mumbai, death toll rise till 5 and 36 injured
Mumbai : Five person were killed and about 3 dozen persons got injured in a major incident of collapse a Railway Foot Overbridge near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) in south Mumbai. The incident took place around 7.30 pm on Thursday evening and five people have died and about 35 people are injured, officials said.
According to the information, a major portion of a foot overbridge collapsed near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in south Mumbai. The Incident at one of the busiest stations in Mumbai took place during peak hours, when there was a lot of rush on the overbridge. All the injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals.
The bridge connected the bustling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus railway station with the Azad Maidan Police Station. was commonly knwon as 'Kasab bridge' after the 26/11 Mumbai attack, as terrorist passed through it during the terror attacks. An eyewitness said when the bridge collapsed, there was a red light at the nearby signal, and that is why the death toll was contained. Another eyewitness said the overbridge was being used despite repairs being carried out this morning.
"Foot over bridge connecting CST platform 1 north end with B T Lane near Times of India building has collapsed," the Mumbai Police tweeted. The traffic in the area has been affected. The police have asked commuters to use alternate routes. Fire brigade personnel reached the spot immediately and rescue work is in full swing. We have appealed the motorists to avoid the D N road to JJ flyover section," Fire brigade officials said.
