PM Modi lays foundation of STP under NAMAMI Gange Programme in Varanasi

Chennai : Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, laid the foundation of Essel Infra’s Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Ramana, Varanasi. Essel Infra, is the PPP Partner for this 50 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) contract based on Hybrid Annuity-PPP model. The project is the very first of the two such projects awarded under NAMAMI Gange Programme.

The project, which will be constructed in eighteen months and will be operated and maintained for 15 years by Essel Infra. This STP will treat 5 crore litres of sewage of Varanasi city every day. The project will use world class SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactors) technology to treat sewage as per stringent international quality standards. Currently, the entire sewage is being pushed into the River Gange without any treatment mechanism and is a major source of pollution in the river.


Rohit Modi, CEO, Essel Infra, said that, “We are proud to be associated with the ‘NAMAMI Gange Programme helmed by Prime Minister. This is an important milestone to achieve the goal of ‘Swachh Bharat’ and cleaning the Holy River Ganga. We are committed to complete the project before the scheduled timeline”.

This first of a kind Sewage Treatment Project is being managed under the ‘NAMAMI Gange Programme, a Flagship Program of the Central Government.
