Platform :
The Jeep Compass is based on the company’s Small Wide 4x4 platform which also underpins the Renegade. However, the length of the platform is 4,400 mm, which makes it 200 mm longer than the Renegade. Moreover, it even has a 221 mm ground clearance which makes is extremely off road-friendly.
Production :
Jeep has its production facilities in countries like Mexico, China and Brazil. However, India will also be a major production centre of the Jeep Compass and the India-made vehicle will be exported in several international markets.
Positioning :
The Jeep Compass, by design, looks like a baby Grand Cherokee. It is positioned between the entry-level Renegade and the high-end Cherokee. It will be replacing the Patriot in the company’s line-up for the international market.
Exterior :
This new entrant into the Indian automobile market has projector headlamps underlined with a strip of LED DRLs each along with fog lamps installed on the lower part of the bumper. Moreover, the front grille design is, without a hint of doubt, is taken from its elder sibling, that is, seven box-shaped air dams.Interior :
Localisation :
The Jeep Compass will be a highly India-made SUV. It will have around 70-80 per cent localisation, which will even enhance the economies and scale besides keeping the price tag extremely competitive.
Powertrain :
The Jeep Compass will have a very powerful engine under the hood. It will be getting a four cylinder 2.0-litreengine which will be capable of making a maximum power of 171 bhp along with a peak torque of 350 Nm. The power will be sent down to the wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission gearbox.
Safety features :
The international version of the Jeep Compass will get up to 70 safety features in total. However, all of those features may not be a part of the India-bound trim. The lesser use of radar frequency may be theculprit and adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist are limited.
Drive mode :
The Compass will get a rotary dial which the company calls Select-Terrain. In auto mode, the car will be able to change between FWD (front wheel drive) to AWD (all wheel drive) according to the traction requirement and torque.
Summing it up :
The Jeep Compass is up against a section of SUVs that is filled with higher category SUVs. In saying that, the car will be competing against the Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Tiguan and the Isuzu MU-X. However, the future fate of the SUV will highly be dependent on the price that it will be retailed at.
