Congress leader Rabindranath Chatterjee 'under pressure' joins TMC
Kolkata : Veteran Congress leader and MLA from Katwa constituency in Burdwan district on Friday joined the Trinamool Congress. He had tendered his resignation from the post of deputy leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) on Wednesday.
Today he admitted to reporters that there was 'pressure’' from his supporters in his constituency to join the Trinamul Congress. Chatterjee switched his political allegiance in the presence of Trinamool secretary general Partha Chatterjee and party supremo Mamata Banerjee's nephew and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee.
"Rabindranath Chatterjee has decided to join the TMC as he feels that TMC is the only party which works for the development of the state under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee," state Education and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee said.
"He too wants to take part in the development of our Maa Mati Manush government and work for the people," the minister said.
Along with Chatterjee, who was elected from Burdwan's Katwa constituency in 2011, several councillors and panchyat members of Congress from Katwa also switched over to the ruling party.
Nine newly-elected Congress councillors of Katwa municipality also crossed over to the Trinamool at a programme organised at the party's state headquarters, Trinamool Bhawan.
"More and more people are joining Trinamool to be a part of the surge of development and progress initiated by Mamata Banerjee," Chatterjee said after welcoming the new entrants to the party fold.
