23 fishermen were released, who detained in British island

Kanyakumari : 23 fisherman who were caught on May 11 in British island Diego Garcia by its Naval authorities for illegally fishing in their territorial waters, were released on May 23. Said J Nabiraj the Assistant Director of Fisheries department, here on Saturday.

He said that, "The fishermen reached Muttom fishing harbour around 11 a.m. on Friday in their two boats. They were received by the officials and their relatives and friends. Twenty one of the released fishermen were from Kanyakumari and two from Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala."

However, their fishing material, wireless instruments and GPS were not released, he said. This was the last batch of fishermen released from the British island, the official said.

Nabiraj said the central and state government had intervened to secure their release.
